Over the bridge of a transatlantic, Liza, who had been an overseer for the SS in Auschwitz, thinks she's seen Marta, a former detainee she thought was dead.

"The strength and beauty of the film are not harmed by the fact that it was never finished (Munk died before shooting ended, in 1961): the finished sequences in the camp are opposed by the simple fixed shots aboard the ship.
