Built in 1883, the Chelsea Hotel is a New York icon. But not of any kind of New York: it's an icon of the filthy bohemia; of the artists who feel more comfortable among drug-addicts and prostitutes than in exhibitions or cocktails; not an ivory tower, but one of badly-lit corridors, worn-out carpets and smells that would make the Muses run off in fright.
