In Gustavo Fontán’s La madre, Gustavo Fontan’s mother doesn’t appear, as in his previous film El árbol, in spite of which he still deals with family, partly through the inclusion, here, of his son Federico (who also appeared in his first feature, Donde cae el sol), but, above all, because of that intimacy of his images, which reminds of the fusion, from carnal to mystic, of Sokurov’s diptych about fathers, mothers and sons.
