Synopsis
Fascinated by Eustache's debut, Godard gave him the film stock left over from Masculine-Feminine as a gift for Eustache to shoot his second semi-autobiographical film. He also lent him the film's star, Jean-Pierre Léaud, who shines in his performance as an impoverished guy from Narbonne who takes a job as Santa Claus to finally get to buy a fashionable duffle coat, discovering that the disguise allows him to do many things he previously only dreamed of. Winner of the Critics' Week Prize at the Cannes festival, Santa Claus Has Blue Eyes, with its fast editing, with its almost documentary immediacy, combined with Léaud's witty voice-over, is a buoyant, done-to-scale portrayal of life in the provinces.
