Synopsis

This film by Hoffman (who has dealt with extreme sports in 20 Seconds of Joy and Journey to the Center) is the recording of a working day. The title, explicit at least regarding the content of this documentary that accepts its denomination without much trouble, tells us right from the start that what we're going to see is the planned, legal, objective day-by-day of many characters linked to the porn industry in California. In short, how they live and work, these men and women whose faces tend to vanish from the memory of the audience to become just abstract, standard mass-produced meat. Thus, 9 to 5 ends up being something of an opaque opposite of Boogie Nights, the aseptic grounding of any erotic fantasy or moral nightmare on the world of porn, the most perfect antidote to any kind of onanism (including cinephilia).
