Synopsis
A new adaptation of the classic Portuguese novel Love of Perdition, by Camilo Castelo Branco (one of the versions was directed by Manoel de Oliveira in 1979). Barroso was cinematographer in many titles by Oliveira and João César Monteiro (among others), and is also an actor. Barroso is conscious that there have been other film versions of the novel, and one of the characters says he has seen one of them. Also conscious that he's working with a classic book, Barroso shows the book (which has an influence on the protagonist) in the film. Barroso also knows that in this type of stories there's a lot of clichés that must be avoided, but he prefers to make a melodrama with those clichés. How can one make a genre film with intelligence and shrewdness? How can one be modern while still being passionate? One of the great accomplishments of Un amor de perdiçao is to keep on being a passionate, tragic, and thrilling melodrama without letting itself be controlled by clichés but coexisting with them, using them for the film's benefit. Barroso, apart from being camera operator, also acts in the film, in the role of Teresa's father. And he doesn't speak: he stays in the shadows as the puppet master to this strangely luminous tragedy.
