    Synopsis

    A plane flying through the European skies is hijacked and forced to land in Riga, the Latvian capital, whose government has never faced a situation as this one. They start with the negotiations in order to free the hostages. Among the requirements of the hijacker some strange requests leak: a “Laima” chocolate bar, the presence of the biathlon national champions, and the traditional festival of Latvian song to be held, although it’s off-season. These requests are made in order to satisfy Tom, a little kid who’s traveling without his parents and wants to see the local tourist attractions. The most ambitious feature by Pakalnina works as the deconstruction of a thriller, stopping at the successive tangents and secondary actions provoked by the appearance of a strange body in the quiet ecosystem of a small country from the Baltic. “I don’t have leading characters in my films. I’m interested in atmosphere and all that it creates,” says the director. “The Hostage is about playing... It was, for me, playing with commercial elements in a non-commercial film”.
