Synopsis
Director Thijs Gloger is very young, very daring, very rigorous, very disenchanted: he calls this, his second feature, “Holland”. According to what we see, the Holland he shows us is a terminated, terminal, repetitive, monotonous society, with no conflict and no desire. The protagonist in Holland is Olga, a twenty-five year old girl who lives in an apartment that is so empty you couldn’t even say it’s tumbledown. Olga works in his father’s luxurious, ultra-chic clothing store. She smokes, drinks, eats something. She accumulates sexual experiences. There’s no eagerness in nothing and in anyone. If part of the European cinema from the last few years had had boredom and nothingness as visible horizons, then Holland takes this to the last consequences. However, although it shows that comatose social state, Holland is not a dead, spiritless film. On the contrary, it’s a blazing, dirty, cutting, amazing, naked film, built up with the unpredictable and aggressive rhythm of a free jazz session.
