Synopsis
René is Helena Trestikova's portrayal of René Plásil, a teenager with conduct issues in late-80s Czechoslovakia. Through the course of the next 20 years, René changes his image, comes in and out of institutions and alternates jobs, while Trestikova's camera remains always at his side. She and her camera, and the letters they exchange, trying to follow each other's footsteps and to record the changes, both internal and external. And while he overcomes many obstacles to find his place in society, Trestikova does so with the difficulties she has as an artist facing her work and the world. And going through both of them, the story of a country that doesn't know what to do with them, as if it were the parents of a son who has lost his way. One could say that René is a new classic of documentary cinema, one of those that leave marks, which are talked about again and again since they appear.
