Synopsis

In Opera Jawa, which was screened at Bafici 2007, Indonesian Garin Nugroho took a millennial legend and transformed it into an omnivorous melodrama that intoned both tradition and song, and danced confidently to the rhythm of the pictorial traditions of his country: a Grand Guignol that knew of its condition and sang about it. In Under the Tree, Nugroho can’t stop the music, let alone the feet, not to mention magic realism. But now the director moves to Bali, steps on tradition and the occult, and ties both ends (common in the day by day of Sunda islands) with, on the one hand, five superpowers of local dance, and on the other, three stories starring women. Still dazzled by Indonesian cultural tradition, Nugroho doesn’t lose his capacity of transforming his giant cinema into a fascinating, almost microscopic observation of the financial and social reality of his land.
