Synopsis
In Gustavo Fontán’s La madre, Gustavo Fontan’s mother doesn’t appear, as in his previous film El árbol, in spite of which he still deals with family, partly through the inclusion, here, of his son Federico (who also appeared in his first feature, Donde cae el sol), but, above all, because of that intimacy of his images, which reminds of the fusion, from carnal to mystic, of Sokurov’s diptych about fathers, mothers and sons. The mother in this film also doesn’t respond to the stereotype of the maternal, and is less worried about keeping on being a mother (the third, silent fundamental character in the film is the son’s girlfriend) than she is estranged about her situation as a woman about to cease being an object of male desire. The disturbance this causes to the protagonist and her son are shown through tight shots and close-ups of faces that are as affectionate as the diverse shots of objects, small forms of life or corners of a fatherless home, framing at once sharp and abstract, golden lighting that suggests more dusk than dawn, trains of shadows that move forward on the walls.
