Synopsis
“I now realized the lyrical madness to this struggle. It is all about sadness. It is about my sadness. It is about the sorrow of my people. I cannot romanticize the futility of it all. Even the majestic beauty of this island could not provide an answer to this hell. There is no cure to this sadness.” A leading character in this enormous Lav Diaz’s film (his previous work, Death in the Land of the Encantos, exhibited during the last BAFICI, lasted 90 minutes longer), writes that in his notebook, hidden in the forest, while others are trying to keep going ahead with the heavy burdens of their existence. Awarded with the Orizzonti Prize at Venice, Melancholia offers exactly what its title suggests: a winding journey through the deepest and roughest rivers of human existence. A casual and ephemeral trip, where time seems to slip through the screen edges; in an almost eight hours movie, that means the world.
