Synopsis
Shorei X, Nobuhiro Suwa’s disciple and Shinya Tsukamoto’s (Nightmare Detective) assistant director Kaki Yoshida’s first work is a minimalist film, built on the repetition of small gestures, which portrays the monotonous daily routine of Kenichi, a young man who divides his time among working and taking care of his demanding schizophrenic mother. A contemplative film, Shorei X presents the details of everyday life: fixing a meal, the silence between mother and son, a refrigerator door that opens and closes repeatedly, and other singularities of a domestic life burdened with disease and loneliness. Every day, Kenichi locks her mother to prevent her from escaping and going missing, but she still manages to escape. Kenichi also seems to long for a way out of his confinement and to escape elsewhere, as was done by his coworker. However, on a cyclical basis, everything in the film repeats, and thus confronts us with the idea that comfort will come together with a dark end, and with the despair of realizing that there is no possible resolution.
