Synopsis
There is a balance and an affective closeness between Lionel and his daughter Josephine. More than fifty years old, he's close to retiring from his job as a train driver, while she, more than twenty, studies Anthropology and works at a music store. They live in an apartment building in the Parisian periphery, where there's also Noé, a friend of the family who is attracted to Josephine but wants to leave, while Gabrielle has a secret desire for Lionel. These lives that cross each other and diverge like train rails, are the matter modeled by Claire Denis to create a world and a group of characters displaying everyday habits and differences with no emphasis, without condemning or embellishing them, without depriving them of their social, political, and cultural inscriptions or confining them in a ghetto, building up an idea of community with a level of humanity and warmth which is absent in contemporary cinema. Almost tangible and sensorial, 35 rhums is one of those films by Denis that bring back the faith, not only in cinema but also in man.
