Synopsis
With an explicit attitude to dynamite any cultural frontier, Edwin’s first feature proposes a narrative that, even though it’s set in present day Indonesia, shows the problem of his characters’ and his images’ national identity beyond any paradigm. From a surrealism molded in the Google Earth era, Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly is a dismembered narrative with a dream-like texture that never gets to become a collage of strange sketches because it succeeds in maintaining a perplex stylization and tone in each of those hallucinated situations, forged by a precise but complicated imagination. Going from family and sexual melodrama to pop recycling, with an unflinching gaze that triggers something close to a minimalist musical comedy to the obsessive rhythm of “I Just Called to Say I Love You”, the film covers the religion, sports, profession and sexuality of the characters, who, even though they would seem Martian at times, are turned by the film into beings of a disconcerting humanity.
