Synopsis
In an ambiguous place between documentary and fiction, Christophe Lamotte’s film casts a melancholic look over the disintegration and survival of jobs and family, both worlds fused in a realistic and poetic approach, meditative and spontaneous, introspective and sociological, intimate and political. The story follows Aurelia’s voyage, a sociology student who wants to do her thesis on Marie-Rose, a charismatic 68-year-old woman who built a family business from working with junk in the coastal town of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Aurelia’s research consists of various encounters with the evasive Marie-Rose and her family, all of whom are more or less involved in the junk business, all of them under a tense calm. Although the whole family story is true, the sociology student’s character, interpreted by actress Aurelia Petit, is a fictitious device that brings to bear a distance, a sense of reflection and, at the same time, an unusual warmth to approach simple and exceptional people like Marie-Rose.
