Synopsis
Based on the public and private figure of Giulio Andreotti, the memorable Italian politician who was one of the major representatives of Christian Democracy and Prime Minister through three mandates, this film by Sorrentino couldn’t be any less controversial. With a steady pace and a very successful portrayal (cruel for some, too human for others) of an almost caricatural character in real life, the film gets its strength from the excellent performance by an unrecognizable Toni Servillo. The story never ceases to mention his possible connections with the mafia, nor his intimacy with the woman he spent his life with, nor his relation and implication in Aldo Moro’s kidnapping; discovering a very seductive game about the small differences that exist between films like The Godfather or La dolce vita, and the ways in which power and politics are handled in the upper echelons.
